St Gabriel's Project
Rotary helps children with disabilities
The West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook Rotary Club has just completed its second project at St Gabriel’s in Castle Hill. St Gabriel's is an independent, co-educational, Catholic school catering for students with disabilities such as sensory impairment, intellectual disability in the mild to moderate range, and autism.
Our first project was to provide a shaded sensory playground and storage shed. This time we have built a vegetable garden for the children to experience hands-on gardening. The garden has raised beds, a water tank and garden shed.
Club members spent an enjoyable, rewarding and hard-working three days constructing the garden.

What it takes to be a Rotarian
There are members of the community who may have some misunderstandings about what it takes to be a Rotarian.
We are always looking for new members and, in fact, it is new people joining that keeps us alive as a Service club. From time to time I hear people say things that make me think they don't consider joining or even visiting Rotary for all the wrong reasons.
This article is about the things you don't need to join Rotary, and the things you do, just in case you are not sure. The other thing you should know is that we are a very friendly bunch of men and women and we have a lot of fun, as well as achieving some pretty good things in the community.

The Garage Sale 2018
We have just had our best and most successful Garage Sale on the weekend of 13 & 14 October raising a record gross - north of $35k.
Excellent Project Management and a large number of dedicated volunteers, some putting in hours of effort, in the weeks before the weekend contributed to this result. |

President's Report 8th July
We were joined tonight by three guests. Ross Myers, a friend of Carol, checked us out with the intent to be a guest speaker at a future meeting. Evelyn Barnett, returned for the third time, and is intent on supporting Andrew and Max with preparations for the Trivia Night. Our Guest Speaker, Kelly Doyle from Foster Care Angels gave an inspiring talk on the travails of being in foster care. We may be able to assist Kelly in the future by putting some baubles on the Tree of Joy.
Anne and Colin Sharpe joined me on Saturday night at the District Changeover. This was a very enjoyable night. In addition, I was served a vegetarian dish that proved absolutely divine. Johanna Johns (President of RC Beecroft) has invited several Clubs to a combined meeting on 12th August. The guest speaker will be Dominic Perrottet (NSW Treasurer). 2019-20 RI President Mark Daniel Maloney and wife, Gay, will visit Sydney in September. Invitations to three districts, steep dinner cost and limited seating means I will recommend that the Club maintains its regular meeting event. |
Ian Scott (RLI Coordinator) has announced three learning and development courses in Rotary. I urge all members to consider attending this course. The RLI course is run over two days, power-packed with information, learning, and skills you can use in your Rotary life straight away. I can attest that they have managed to encompass both new members and experienced members.
Dates are:
Next week we have Noel Phelan from the Maritime Museum as guest speaker.

Night Report 8th July
Sergeant John opened the meeting, Max proposed a toast to Australia, Rotary and the Trivia night and the meeting was under way.
President Keith welcomed Kelly Doyle our speaker from Foster Care Angels plus 2 guests Ross Myers and Evelyn Barnett. Keith told us of the District Changeover, reminded us of Rotary Leadership courses available and mentioned a joint meeting with Beecroft club on August 12 with the Treasurer of NSW as the guest speaker.
Directors reports:
Community: Neville reminded us of the West Pennant Hills School Fete on Sunday 11 August. We have been asked to provide BBQ assistance. Nev also asked if we knew of anyone interested in the General Assistant job at the school.
Foundation: John made us aware of the Centurion tubes for collection during the year.
Fundraising: Rosemary together with Andrew reminded everyone to get a table together for the Trivia Night. Plans are well underway; we just need tables filled!
St Gabriel and Garage Sale: David informed us that the official opening of the garden is on Friday July 26 at 10am. Hopefully some members can be present to help plant the gardens with the students. Please contact David if you can be there.
The Garage Sale plans (12/13 October) are well under way: bins ordered, truck for 3 days, flyer ready to go, insurance done, 23 members replied NEED RESPONSES FROM 15 OTHER MEMBERS. Position vacant: Facebook Sale person!
Social: Max informed us the SYMT production of “The Producers” is sold out. He may have one single ticket left.
Vocational: Colin wants all members to volunteer for Member Talks and to think of places for vocational visits either in the evening or on a weekend.
Bunnings BBQ: Bill reminded us of a BBQ at Dural on Sat 10th August. Janelle is organising this one.
Ronald McDonald Meals from the Heart: Ross asked for help on Tuesday 30th July to provide a BBQ lunch. 8 people volunteered.
Member Talk: Colin took us to Antarctica and South Georgia to see different types of penguins and the antics/risks that occur.
Guest Speaker Kelly Doyle from Foster Care Angels.
Foster Care Angels is a not-for-profit volunteer run organisation founded in 2011 committed to supporting foster children and their carers. Programs include care packages, training, support and counselling especially for carers, therapy dogs, Christmas Drive, Mental Health programs, carer conferences and Hills carer coaching. Statistics are sad – 46% of boys go into the prison system or juvenile justice, half the children become homeless after leaving Foster care at age 18, 33% of children in care have had 11 families or more.
Sergeant John ran a lively fine session with his singing of “Blueberry Hill” at the start, taxes, deeming credits, body painting, sergeant’s bell all getting a serve. Raffle won by Bill, heads and tails by Andrew.
President Keith wrapped up the meeting reminding the board of a meeting on Wednesday 10 July at Sharpe’s home.

This Week's Humour
My wife has these days when she wants "us to talk about things".
We were discussing aspects of our future so when it was my turn I asked her, "What will you do if I die before you do?”
After some thought, she said that she'd probably look for a house-sharing situation with three other single or widowed women who might be a little younger than herself, since she is so active for her age.
Then she asked me, "What will you do if I die first?”
I replied, "Probably the same thing."
===============================
An elderly gentleman, (mid nineties) very well dressed, hair well groomed, great looking suit, flower in his lapel smelling slightly of a good after shave, presenting a well looked after image, walked into an upscale cocktail lounge. Seated at the bar was an elderly looking lady (mid eighties). The gentleman walked over, sat along side of her, ordered a drink, took a sip, turned to her and said, "So tell me, do I come here often?"
===============================
An elderly gentleman had suffered from serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor, and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%.
The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor, and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again."
The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!"
